About Beat Based Movement

As a GRAMMY-award artist, wellness coach and certified boxing instructor, Jorge Villanueva blends his passions, of life coaching, music and sports to build a therapeutic fitness journey: Beat Based Movement (BBM).

BBM programs use music to guide a wellness practice, boxing and other exercises, leaning on drums and hand percussion as an anchor and to set the pace, using counting technique and rhythm coordination.  This is a workout for everybody looking for endurance and a fun workout routine, and it’s especially helpful for those who are dealing with mental health or neurologic disorders.

The class starts by connecting to the individual’s pulse and counting each beat out loud.  Similarly to the drummer’s philosophy, we use timekeeping and tempo to embellish the rhythm. This makes the exercise feel secondary to the music, enabling fluid body motion.

For regular boxing, we start by jumping rope, follow by shadow boxing and drills on the punching bag, mitts and double-end bag.

For Mental Health and life style, the speed and repetition of the thoughts, in harmony with rhythmic patterns, trigger the ability of the brain to undergo structurally or psychological changes (Neuroplasticity).  This aims to create new muscle memory and trigger neurons, which are proved to help people with Mental Health or nervous system disorders reclaim some movement, balance,  coordination and a more balance lifestyle.

We want to give the rhythm of life back to the people, using beat-based moves – already in all of us! Plus, every class gives 10% of the profits back to non-profits working with underserved and vulnerable communities amidst COVID-19.

“Thinking and moving achieves coordination.
Thinking, moving and feeling gives you balance.”

– Jorge Villanueva, Beat Based Movement

Beat Based Movement

Beat Based Movement it’s a mind and body workout program, for mental health and healthy lifestyle. BBM uses a musical approach to find your rhythm and purpose, using Drums and Hand Percussion rhythms that is applied to emotion and mind practice, as well as  boxing moves and combinations.

The idea is to think as drummers, like most contemporary western bands include a drummer for purposes including timekeeping and embellishing the musical timbre, same way we (human beings) keep our tempo and rhythm going with our daily routine as well as embellishing it with our personalities.  So, the way it works is by using drums and hand percussion with musical note values (subdivisions), this will automatically create a mathematical part of the rhythm and then applying it to boxing (combinations), We teach young athletes and adults, whether you are dealing with a movement disorder or just looking to get in shape through rhythm and drums.

Starting with feeling the tempo (pulse) like a dance as well as counting out loud. Doing this repeatedly will create a new muscle memory and an independence that can help people with Parkinson’s along the way. The idea is to create new muscle memory through Neuroplasticity (Boxing movements, rhythm and drums).

NEUROPLASTICITY & THE BRAIN

 What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to adapt and change. “Euro” is for the nerve cells, or neurons, and “plastic” refers to the modifiable nature of our brain and nervous system, and how experiences reorganize neural pathways in the brain. Long lasting functional changes in the brain occur when we learn new things or memorize new information. These changes in neural connections are what we call neuroplasticity.

So how BBM programs effect Neuroplasticity?

Our programs provide stimulation from multi-sensory inputs and movement in order to activate neural pathways used in processing of sensory information. Neuronal connections in these pathways are strengthened and new connections are established through repeated motions of each exercise. Repetition plays a huge role in the development of every athlete, to the point that the body begins to operate on muscle memory. The feet movement with upper body workout in sync with the drum and counting technique, will give you good balance and coordination.

Boxing

Why is boxing called the Sweet Science and how can it help in real life? It is called the Sweet Science because it requires the fighters to be fierce, tactical, and have a certain amount of anticipation for their opponents’ next move. It takes logic and science to be able to create an environment where that is all possible. Boxing it’s all about balance, when you create a solid foundation, you are grounded, and it’ll be difficult for anything to knock you down. The moves, coordination and breathing routines at BBM it’s more or less the same movement you do in your daily life, at home, at work or in your social life. At BBM we’ll help you strengthening that quality in you, and If you are dealing with neurological disorder or brain injury, this will definitely help you create an environment of trust around your workout and life.  We need to understand that most of the time our mind it’s our opponent, so if we can anticipate its punches, based on this Sweet Science, it’ll never knock you down.

DRUMS & RHYTHM

Hand Drums have been played as far back as 5500 B.C, from ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. Drumming is a great workout for your brain and body. Research shows that the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain actually synchronizes the left and right hemispheres and listening to drum sounds regular can have the same effect as drumming itself. For that reason, BBM program combines the physical, mental aspect of Boxing with the powerful and healing sounds of the drums, to give a balance workout. These could be a powerful tool in helping retrain the brains of people who suffers from mental health, have some level of damage or impairment, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), after a stroke, or where there is a neurological disease such a Parkinson’s.
